On a mission to help nurses and health professionals recover from nurse- and work-specific traumatization

I’m Dr. Lorre Laws, a nurse who holds a Ph.D. in nursing.  I am a nursing professor at a R01 university in the U.S. where I develop and deliver integrative nursing curricula to the next generation of nurses.  I authored Nursing Our Healer’s Heart: A Recovery Guide for Nurse Trauma & Burnout and am the founder/director of The Haelan Academy nonprofit organization that facilitates trauma-burnout healing worldwide.

With the goal of meeting nurses and health professionals in their living spaces with an unbiased, evidence-based framework to guide their trauma and burnout healing, I conducted research across four disciplines (nursing, neurophysiology, relational neuroscience, integrative health).  While it would be expected for me to write a dense textbook or publish in peer-reviewed journals with limited access for those in need, I chose a different path.  I chose to self-fund five years of research and write a book that would be accessible to everyone.  So I could meet nurses and other health professionals in their living room with accessible resources and support.  I’m on a mission to help nurses, providers, and health professionals to prevent and recover from work-related and often avoidable traumatization and burnout.

The world is hemorrhaging nurses and healthcare professionals.  By the end of the decade, there will be a global shortage of 10 million health workers. The mainstream narrative is that they are burned out, compassion fatigued, and morally injured.  That may well be true, as was the case for me.  But I, like millions of others, was doing all the self-care  . . .year after year. . . stuck in a cycle of hope and despair.

As it turns out, I wasn’t “just” burned out.  I had nurse-specific traumatization, that no amount of traditional self-care alone would wholly heal.  Sure, self-care helps to ameliorate symptoms, but it doesn’t get to the root cause and needed trauma healing.  I, like so many of my colleagues, needed an evidence-based process that addressed the unique avoidable and unavoidable trauma exposure in the workplace.

So I rolled up my sleeves and got to work.

I talk the talk.

I walk the walk.

And I made a full recovery.

Health organizations worldwide need effective external programs to help nurses and health professionals to heal and recover, to insulate themselves from harsh practice conditions and health system inadequacies.  While there are many internal organizational programs offered, it’s like sending a firefighter into a burning building and asking them to meditate.  Hence, my Haelan Academy nonprofit organization.  We partner with health organizations and healthcare educators to bring preventative and trauma-burnout healing services to students and employees.  For a safe, well, and thriving health workforce translates directly to improved patient safety and outcomes, care quality, and the organization’s bottom line.

As a Toastmasters International trained and award winning speaker, I have delivered engaging, entertaining, and inspiring talks and keynote addresses to diverse audiences for (gasp!) nearly four decades. From podcast guesting to keynote speaking, to lecturing in front of hundreds of healthcare professionals, I meet people where and how they are with the intention of making a meaningful difference in their life.  Be it a smile, a ray of hope, a pathway towards healing, or a concise distillation of the evidence – I stand and deliver.  It is my honor to serve you and your organization however needed.

I do live, virtual, and hybrid events across all outlets.  From podcasts to lecture halls, keynote address, individual or panel interviews, television and radio – I do it all.  I am happy to share my knowledge, insights, and heart with your audience as aligns with your mission.

I’m as comfortable and as effective when presenting to my webcam as I am an audience of thousands.  Drop a note in the contact form with your specific needs or questions and we’ll create an amazing experience for your audience.

The short answer is “it depends”.

There’s no one-size-fits all pricing structure because there are simply too many variables (virtual, hybrid, in-person, duration, audience size, dates, etc.).  I’m affordable because accessibility matters to me more than dollars.  At the same time, I have business expenses and payroll, just like everyone else.  We’ll arrive at a fair arrangement, of that I have no doubt!

Because I have chosen not to employ a speaker’s bureau, you’ll save a hefty fee reduction (around 30%). All speaking engagement fees are tax deductible and benefit The Haelan Academy, a nonprofit organization that provides education and healing services to nurses and health professionals experiencing trauma or burnout.

It’s truly the best win-win-win scenario for your community, your organization, and my nonprofit.  Let’s do this!
